As I begin my term as ABEM President, I look forward to what the upcoming year has to offer; preparing for the launch of the ABEM Certifying Exam in 2026, working toward a new subspecialty in Disaster Medicine, welcoming new members on our Board and Resident Ambassador Panel, and so much more.
The first Certifying Exam for physicians seeking initial certification will be held in spring 2026, and I am excited to be part of this new and innovative process. If you’d like to help refine this exam experience for the next generation of emergency physicians, apply to be a volunteer for the practice exam! ABEM is also looking for new volunteers to get involved in our many activities and roles. Fill out the interest form to learn more.
ABEM has worked with the American Board of Preventive Medicine to submit an application for a new subspecialty in Disaster Medicine. Establishing this certification would help ensure communities have improved access to physicians with advanced knowledge and skills in all phases of disaster management. Share your support!
I would also like to welcome the newly appointed public members of the ABEM Board of Directors. I look forward to having their expertise and insights help shape the future of ABEM and Emergency Medicine!
James D. Thomas, MD
ABEM President 2025-2026
