Over the past several months, many of us at ABEM embarked on conferences and speaking engagements across the states: returning with fresh insights, engaging conversations, and valuable perspectives from our colleagues in Emergency Medicine and the broader medical community.
Our peers consistently echo the message that while we are on the right path with initiatives, change is difficult. From the advances in Emergency Medicine practices to the future of certification and exam formats, the field continues to evolve.
To elevate our current initiatives, we have been reflecting on our impactful history and honor the dedication, commitment, and legacy of the visionaries who thoughtfully built the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
This September kicked off ABEM's 45th anniversary of being recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties as a medical specialty. We look back on our achievements and forward to new challenges. We thank you for moving ABEM forward and taking steps to maintain and improve the high standards of Emergency Medicine physicians. Congratulations Newly Certified Physicians!
Congratulations to more than 1,000 physicians who attained ABEM certification this fall! Being certified represents your commitment to your patients and the specialty. Verify your Certification.
Certifying Exam
The exam will replace the former Oral Exam for physicians looking to become ABEM certified. While the new Certifying Exam will not affect those physicians already ABEM certified, we are committed to keeping the specialty informed on the development process.
What: Will assess additional competencies, e.g., ultrasound skills, procedural skills, patient-centered communications, and more!
Where: AIME Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. The location is used for other certification exams across medicine and is a professional assessment center, not a simulation center. A proven administrative infrastructure has already been developed and will allow a fair, equitable, and standardized experience for all candidates.
When: The first administration will be in 2026. ABEM is excited to provide greater scheduling flexibility throughout the year.
📣Calling all future ABEM-certified physicians! ABEM President Diane L. Gorgas, M.D., will be discussing the ins and outs of the Certifying Exam and what you need to know as a future exam candidate! Register here.

The Coalition of Board-Certified Emergency Physicians (COBCEP) works to reduce the burden of additional state-mandated certifications for emergency physicians. Recently, the coalition conducted a study to understand the perspectives of emergency medicine physicians toward continuing medical education (CME).
Key Findings
Most physicians practicing in states with state-mandated, topic-specific CME requirements believed:
Participation in ABEM continuing certification could be used to reduce the need for state-mandated, topic-specific CME requirements (83.6%).
State-mandated, topic-specific requirements unlikely to improve patient care (70.8%).
Although well-intended, state CME requirements may lack relevancy and can, at times, place an undue burden on emergency physicians.
Tailoring CME requirements to increase relevance to their patient populations and reduce barriers to completing CME could enhance knowledge translation and improve patient outcomes.
