Thank you for caring for patients at their most vulnerable, often amid uncertainty and under extraordinary demands. Your clinical judgment matters deeply, as do the moments when you listen, offer reassurance, and help patients and families feel understood.
Patients arrive without warning and place their trust in the physician caring for them. You earn that trust through competence, compassion, and connection. ABEM certification supports that trust by providing an independent assessment of the knowledge and skills our specialty requires.
For 47 years, ABEM has worked alongside emergency physicians to uphold the highest standards in Emergency Medicine. Certification reflects rigorous training and an ongoing commitment to learning and improvement. Today, more than 50,000 emergency physicians hold ABEM certification, united by a shared responsibility to patients and to our profession.
That responsibility calls for both excellence and humility: recognizing our limitations, learning from one another, and reflecting on how we can improve. ABEM shares that obligation. We continually evaluate our assessments to keep them relevant, fair, evidence-based, and aligned with Emergency Medicine practice.
As I begin my term as ABEM President, I am inspired by ABEM-certified physicians, volunteers, and staff who make this work possible. Together, we will continue to strengthen the value of ABEM certification by listening, engaging, and partnering with the broader Emergency Medicine community.
I invite you to help shape what comes next. Consider a volunteer role with ABEM, suggest topics for future Key Advances, tell us what we can do to help you and your patients, so we can better understand the work you do, the challenges you face, and the connections that give your work meaning.
I look forward to hearing from you and working together in the year ahead. Thank you for what you do.
Felix Ankel, MD
ABEM President 2026-2027
